While people typically think of Colorado when they think of skiing the Rocky Mountains, there is still good skiing a bit further south. For some skiers, in fact, the slopes in New Mexico might even be a better option! Although New Mexico does not get as much snow as Colorado, their mountains typically are sizable, with a good mixture of easy, intermediate, and difficult runs. Furthermore, the pleasant weather of New Mexico is a really nice touch. Although skiing in weather that often sits in the high-30s and above can seem odd, especially when you can see bare ground off the mountain, it is certainly a pleasant experience as well! If you are thinking of taking a ski vacation to New Mexico, here are three great options.
The most popular and most well-known ski option in New Mexico is Taos. You will find a great variety of easy, intermediate, and difficult slopes at Taos Ski Valley, all accessible from eight lifts! This is a big mountain with affordable prices, and the snow is typically in good condition. Not far from Taos is Angel Fire. Although this mountain is smaller than Taos, it keeps the crowds manageable with a back side of the mountain that compliments the front side. Along with the handful of challenging black diamonds and long, pleasant greens, this mountain is full of wonderful intermediate runs. The town of Angel Fire is quiet and pleasant, which makes this a perfect mountain for families. Angel Fire also has extremely affordable prices. Santa Fe has one big advantage over Taos and Angel Fire, and it is the availability of activities outside of skiing. Rather than those towns like Angel Fire and Taos that exist mostly for skiing, Santa Fe has been around since long before it provided skiing. The availibility of extra options and activities in Santa Fe just might make it the perfect destination for your ski vacation, even if the skiing – although still great – is not quite as great as what you will find in Angel Fire and Taos. Next time you are planning a ski trip, consider avoiding the big crowds and the bitter cold of Colorado for the pleasant slopes of New Mexico. Who knows, you might even find yourself wishing you made the switch a whole lot sooner!
